I have done a www.mysite.com search on MSN and look 300 links deep and it's not there
I also did a www.mysite.com search Directhit.com and I'm not in the top 300
I also did a www.mysite.com search on Hotbot and I'm # 11 out of 11
I also did a www.mysite.com search Canada.com and I'm #1
I submitted to Canada.com 12-3-00
I used PositionTech paid inclusion on 1-31
I have every page of my site linked from the home page with absolute links
I have links on my home page to other sites.
I have 1000's of sites that link to me (according to WmW linkpop checker)
So my questions are.
1. How do I tell if I'm in the "Main" INK database?
2. Does Hotbot and canada.com use the same Database
3. How can I find my listing on MSN and Directhit
I don't know the answer to this for sure, but this is what I do know.
If you do a search at Canada, Looksmarts' 'websites from Inktomi', and NBCi's 'additional sites' the resuts are all the same. (There are a few exceptions)
This leads me to believe that if I can't find my site in these 3 places, my site is not in the Inktomi data base.
I don't know if that helps or not. If anyone knows the answer to this, I would love to know as well.
So, I've found all my sites in Canada, MSN (web pages), Looksmart (Inktomi listing),
and NBCi additional sites.
Should I just assume they're all listed and move on with trying to increase rankings for them?
I think I may have answered my own question.
Thanks ya all, I think I need to go home:)

But my page that has been submited to INK (via positiontech) still does not show up on MSN when looking for www.MYSITE.com
If I go to canada.com and search for www.MYSITE.com it shows up #1
on Hotbot still #11 out of 11 but shows no where for any keyword phrases.
on directhit it's no where. either by by www.MYSITE.com or by keyword seach.
So I can see that my site is in MSN's version of the DB
But as far as I can tell it's not in directhit's version
It seems that there are 3 DB's
1 for MSN
1 for DH
1 for hotbot
Sometimes habits dictate what answers I/we are likely to give. MSN is my SE of choice for tracking my INK pages because I also get the most traffic from MSN. The other experiences above are equally as valid. In the good old days I used ANZWERS.com because it was very pure INK with little tweaking.
For us, if we do well in MSN, we do OK to fair in the other INK portals.
If your keywords are real competitive, focus on getting into ODP and LookSmart. If they are not, by all means go after the directory listings but focus on INK. WE have a combination of solutions across several domains. There is no longer a "one solution fits all" fix anymore...

Each INK portal has control over the final outcome of their use of the INKTOMI database. In other words they are pulling from the same pot but cooking the results in different ways.
Hotbot seems to be keyword load sensitive (too many and you're gone) where MSN seems to thrive on heavy KWs. We target out competitive KWs and phrases to MSN and find fair result with longer phrases, on hotbot, etc.
Wish there was a more cut and dried answer, but the word is experiment, experiment, experiment - and now with INKs pay to play you can do that quickly - before, it took a month for each.
good luck

I thank PT that it now get 48HS refresh's.
It has alowed 1 of my sites to go from
non exstiant to 30 to 6 on MSN for a highly competetive KW phrases within a week.
So yes testing testing testing has proven to work (atleast for most sites).
I have some really good rankings on MSN for many competetive sites
except 1
"...MSN seems to thrive on heavy KWs.."
One of the main KW for that site is "web site development"
witch seems to be a "heavy kw" but maybe it's to heavy??
I "think" it's a good KW to traget for a site that provides web site development (more on back end development then anything else)
I'm sure there are 1000000000's of other kw's that could be used in place of this but, as you know, it's one the client wants.
I might just have to cut my losses and find better KW's.
thanks,
lucky

I just look for www.MYSITE.com on ANZWERS.com and got "Sorry -- your search yielded no results."

When you say Hotbot is keyword load sensitive, are you talking about the number of different keywords used on a given page, or the number of occurences of keywords (density)?
>where MSN seems to thrive on heavy KWs.
Again, a variety of different keywords on a page, or a high keyword density?
>We target out competitive KWs and phrases to MSN and find fair result with longer phrases, on hotbot, etc.
How does this relate to the first two points? What are the differences between using competitive KWs and including them in longer phrases? Is it the density you're varying when targeting Hotbot or MSN?
The algo for INK doesn't seem to have changed from last year or the year before and so on. But the way the INK portals handle the data has.
When we target an MSN tweaking we scatter the KWs in all the right places title, metas, alt tags and the body with some use of H1 H2 H3 and/or H4. MSN seems to thrive on the number of occurences of a KW or phrase - to a point.
Hotbot seems to want them place throughout the page in less numbers.
MSN and Hotbot seem to put phrases together from anywhere on the page or from any tags. (Baked Apples in Atlanta Georgia) does not have to be totether. A page that is ranking for Baked Apples can have (in Atlanta Georgia) as an after thought only one time on the page or as an ALT TAG, or what ever and rank for the whole phrase but not in quotes.
So we target the KWs and and add lots of secondary terms to later find them being combined and found via long phrase.
Experiment - Experiment - Experiment it will pay you back a hundred fold for your time. I only have a few paid for pages that are mine a bunch that are clients. And we are one of the few lucky people who has a ton of pages in the old DB from when INK treated the rich and poor equally.
Get into the head of the person searching for you and you will open a world of new traffic you never imagined was there.

Maybe this is getting off topic, but I was wondering if your optimizations (ie, in the title, metas, alt tags, etc.) were for the MSN Inktomi listings, or for MSN's revision of Looksmart listings. From what I can tell, MSN only examines the Looksmart editor's description and your page title to determine what keywords you come up for, at least on the "web directory sites." I've also noticed that on competitive keywords the Inktomi listings are buried, so I guess my question is, if you're getting high ranking sites, are they from Inktomi or Looksmart?
Welcome to WMW and The INK forum. Most of my experimental pages are very spammy and would never be accepted in LS. Most of the info you were reading above is old - first of the year posts. Most if not all the informaiton is still valid, but - the only sure way into the INK databse is cash.
We always target MSN because of the volumn they can provide. But, in doing so we also get some, I repeat, some results from the other INK portals.
hope that helps

Maybe a better question would be, do you think Inktomi is worth paying for if I can get good results from MSN by using Looksmart?
The folks at PT have been very honorable and helpful, but I would guess that if MSN and INK go their separate ways, PT will not be in a position to or have any desire to hand out refunds.
Buyer beware...
