Ok, I took the plunge and submitted some optimized doorways to PositionTech on 11/21/00. They were spidered by PT's 169.207.238.172 shortly thereafter. I logged-in to PT's website and the status for all pages was SUBMITTED. None have been spidered by Slurp at all. This morning I decided to look again at their status at PT and they all have the status ERROR. I emailed them to figure this out, but since it's Thanksgiving, I doubt I'll find out anytime soon. My guess is that this either has something to do with one of the following:

1. Dark blue text on black background
2. Doorways to similar destinations(I say similar because they each have dynamic addresses but are essentially the same destination)

Any thoughts? These pages are not IP delivered. I may have to move to that now because it seems that PT runs some sort of screening process for INK to assure no doorways or something.

moby

I,ve submitted doorways with no problems, just one thought check that the payment has gone through ok with the credit card, I think it was jilly that did have some problems with payment which also held things up.

tigger,
I just called my credit card company and they said the charge went through with no problems. I think they said it was charged to Computer Network Services or something like that. Anyway, it must be something else. I may have to wait until next week to find out if they have time off for the holiday. Hopefully I can get this resolved. I'd like to get into Inktomi's database.

Moby1,

Many things can go wrong from robots.txt to server being down. Call their sales number, they have really good customer service...

Thanks stcrim.

I checked the logs and there hasn't been a request for a robots.txt since submitting to PT and all the submitted pages appear to have been spidered successfully by PT. It must be something else. I called support, there was no answer and I don't expect there to be one until tomorrow. I'll keep you guys informed. Thanks for all the help.

Moby1, I had the exact same problem with the delay in slurp stopping by. I emailed them and slurp came by the next day. All is good, at least with that domain.

Chris999,
That is somewhat reassuring to hear someone had a similar experience and now things are going smoothly. Maybe it's just a kink that PT has to work out. They're still relatively new. I'll keep you all informed of the outcome. Thanks.

I spoke with Support at PT this morning. They told me that there was a server error on my end and that I would be re-spidered in 48 hours. I looked through my logs and can't see any down time or 404 errors, so it's all sort of a mystery for me. The PT spider had no problems. I guess I'll find out more in a day or so if the spider misses again.

Thought you guys might want to take a look at this. I received it from PT Support earlier. Check out the third sentece.

Hello,

Inktomi is reporting a "Site Error: Server failure". This could have been
cause if your server was down when Inktomi tried to spider your pages or the
server did not respond properly in serving the pages.

If your using cloaking I would suggest looking at your script also.

You subscribed on the 21st, if your still seeing the problem on the 26th
please let us know so we can look closer into it.

Best Regards,

Talked to PT support again today. It turns out the problem has something to do with DNS and Inktomi. They keep getting timed out. Everyone other than the Ink's spiders has no problem visiting my site. They are going to try to get Inktomi to increase the amount of time before timing out, but who knows. This may be why I never get spidered by Ink via Canada and Hotbot. Anyway, just want to let you guys know.

My entries have DNS Error also. I wrote PT and let them know that I didn't have anything in my error logs indicating a DNS error, nor did I have any record of Ink crawling the pages. They wrote back and told me that it would be back again in 48 hrs. and to let them know if it hadn't gotten resolved by Thursday. Keeping fingers crossed.

Scott,
Any developements? My pages were spidered by Ink for the first time on the 27th, but then reverted back to SERVER FAILURE status on the 29th. I'm getting a little frustrated.

Yes, I bet you are! Are you doing IP based severing? Could you use your IP instead of the domain name? That would take care of the DNS issue.

Thanks for the advice littleman. That will be my last resort though. Right now I'm changing the secondary DNS server so maybe that'll help. If it doesn't I may try one or two other adjustments first. I'm moving my main server now as well, so the IP is going to be changing.

Any update on how this was resolved?

Changing secondary DNS server seems to have worked. Both primary and secondary were both on the same machine before. Things are now going smoothly, outside of the fact that I think there was a algo change with INK yesterday. Anyone else see it?

I've got a few more top positions since yesterday with no changes to the pages, no huge movements - but going from #5 or #6 to #1 without having to do anything is always nice :)
