I've noticed in my logs that i'm getting a lot of traffic from 72.14.194.29

It seems to be tied to beta.msn.com, when i do a traceroute to it i get it goes though a IP that resolves to GOOGLE.something.MYISPNAME.com.

At any rate the Referal string from 250 some examples of it that i have are all homepages of related sites, or google searches or Beta MSN searches.

I've talked to some other sites as well and they are reporting similar wierdness. ie tons of referals from homepages of other sites. The useragents are across the map

I did some more digging, Its canada only so far and started last night.

I did tracroutes from seperate networks. One of them is going through

core2-1-1-0.pao.net.google.com

Another is going through

Google.PLALCA01GR00.bb.telus.com

Looks like traffic is flowing through google servers as the destination is IP is assigned to google.

Are these fake referal strings, or is google passing on information that has up until now been lost? IE if someone types in a URL into the browser the referal string wouldn't be passed along.
