Bing Referrals May Be Steadier Than You Think

What looked like a big dip since launch may not be so...

Good news if you hope that Bing will deliver a steady stream of visitors...

I was delighted to see good visitor numbers from Bing but dissapointed to see the number of referals drop off (viewing Google Analytics stats)... BUT I made the mistake of viewing 30 day stats and failed to see (until today) that Google have bing stats under "bing.com / referral" AND "bing / organic" (as they have added the code to extract keywords).

What looked like a severe drop in traffic is now looking remarkably stable. After taking stats from 3 sites and weighting the daily results for expected traffic levels, here are our relative daily referral numbers from Bing:

0.81 - Monday, June 1, 2009
1 - Tuesday, June 2, 2009
1.05 - Wednesday, June 3, 2009
0.99 - Thursday, June 4, 2009
0.97 - Friday, June 5, 2009
0.77 - Saturday, June 6, 2009
0.81 - Sunday, June 7, 2009
1.03 - Monday, June 8, 2009
1.01 - Tuesday, June 9, 2009
1.01 - Wednesday, June 10, 2009
1.02 - Thursday, June 11, 2009

It appears that they have relatively fewer weekend users (for our niche) but apart from that the stats are remarkably consistent (note this data is only from 26,000 referrals over that period).

How does this stack up to your numbers?

Long live Bing!

I've been following how Bing referrals are holding out. The following stats are from a house-hold name brand's site we do the analytics for and are limited to searches in the North American market by IP and do not include PPC referrals - but are indicitive of trends I am seeing on all sites.

1st June - 7th June:

Google 40,013 visits (duplicate searches removed in all cases)
Bing 3,838 (slightly understated as it took a few hours for us to correctly attribute Bing searches).
Yahoo 5,809

8th June to 14th June:
Google 38,882
Bing 4,746
Yahoo 5,773

15th June to 16th (inc):
Google 14,482
Bing 1,922
Yahoo 2,134

What does this prove? Probably too early to tell - apart from the fact that Bing traffic seems to be holding up so far and this is reflected in many sites we monitor.
