.com and .com/index.htm

I am having trouble only getting MSN to index .com only. Both .com and .com/index.htm is being listed. It seems to be having a direct effect on results in index.

Yes, it does, because it "splits" your link popularity and, in the case of Google, your PageRank, across multiple URLs.

Have you read the threads on domain [google.com] and URL canonicalization [google.com] here at WebmasterWorld?

That will generally happen when there are links pointing to both versions.

If you can find where the links to .com/index.html are and get them altered to point to the .com version only, that will eventually solve the problem.

It's also best practice to make sure all the links within your site reference pages the same way to avoid this issue.

Thanks for the help. I can fix some internal links leading to .index.htm.

The problem is inbound links going to .index. Especially now that there are no Tools to check this specifically since MSN backlink checker is not operating?
