Samsung Series 7 slate runs Windows 8 great and is X86 i5, but it runs about ~1300 bucks. If the Surface Pro can beat that pricing, i'm game :)
I'm already thrilled at the concept of being able to dock my tablet and use full desktop to get the most benefit from my investment. I too haven't jumped on ipad or any tablets either, waiting on windows 8 to see how they pull off their convergence.

Where I live the price of top-notch notebooks has fallen by a third in about a year, simply in order to compete with iPad sales.
The limited function iPad sells at the same price here as said notebook.
Apple denied they were going to make a "tablet device" all through iPad's production and development. Only at the finale did they admit it.
Their next major product is so obvious, there's a universal demand for what Bill hungers for. You can be certain Apple are well down the line to delivering the final nail in the notebook's coffin.
I'm no speed-typist, but using the iPad "keyboard" is a dream, and the other tablets; Acer, Sony, Samsung awful in comparison.
Save your money, don't waste it on "Surface"; it will sink as soon as the full-blown OSX iPad-replacement appears.

That's not going to put a damper on Surface. Only people who have invested in the Mac/OSX line will be excited about something like that. The vast majority who have invested in the Microsoft Windows OS will still be interested in a tablet/laptop that will let them run Windows software.

Typing on an ipad is not a dream lol.. Surface for me is exactly what i've been holding out for - a full blown OS in a tablet form factor that i can dock at my desk and use the peripherals & software i'm already used to using. iPad simply can't touch that
