My office network has been very slow. We have 12 PC and 8 Mac's. What tools are available to test the network to see where the bottle neck(s) are (preferably Mac OS X software, but willing to use PC apps.)?

We have a cable internet connection hooked up to a cisco router. The internet is slow along with copying files from client to client. The ISP says their Internet is fine, I think it might be the router. How can I test to see what the problem is?

All computers have at least 10/100 NIC's and all have static IP's...

Any thoughs?

Hi psychobilly,

Welcome to the board.

I have heard of Helios LanTest, it is a free utility. I have heard some good about it, but never tried it.

Unless your Internet usage is very light, I'm not surprised you're having slow performance sharing cable modem access among 20 users. If you upload much this will be exacerbated.

Since you mention the slowness is noticed when working over the Internet, I'd consider this the prime suspect.

Have you tried using the access after hours, to see if it's faster when you're the only user?

Here's a link to test a machine's Internet connection speed. It should work find for Mac OS X, and probably with your PC's too.
