well if you notice, google no longer count backlinks from directories because people have been submitting to every single directories, so you may see there are many pagerank decrease in many of the websites starting this month.
So, please do social bookmarking and search engine submission, also build up the backlinks in great PR sites.
hope that helps
The best way to get one way links is to make your content link worthy..offer something that will make webmasters voluntarily link to you..however for creating such content:
1. You gotto invest a lot of time and effort into researching about the market, industry, understanding needs and then create the content.
2. After creating the content, you need to find the right places to promote that content in order to trigger the viral effect [considering that your content is really worthy and valuable]
Not all content will have the same effect..some will get u tons of link while some won't work at all...but you need to keep on working on your content as that is the best way to get links that matter.

THEN start actively seeking places that talk about this kind of stuff. Searching 'gift wrapping' is a good start to look for places that might be interested in these types of articles. Send 'em an email asking for a link. I bet you could branch out into getting links from sites that talk about other types of paper folding, like paper airplanes, or origami. Or other stores that sell gift type of items yet who don't compete. Send them an email suggesting a link - or even a block of links on 'how to gift wrap creatively' would make their site better for their visitors. The companies that manufacture the gift wrap might give you a link. Search for blogs that talk about 'mother's day gifts' and things like that. Send them an email.
THEN after you've given out the specific directions, you can always still offer to do it for them for a fee. Some people - many people - will read your directions not for how to do it, but to qualify you as an expert. Then they'll pay you to do it. Which means you make some new sales simply because they can get the same item from a 100 different places, maybe even cheaper, but they actually want it nicely wrapped - so they buy from you. But do the links first :).
If you've got some cash to spend, consider paying a celebrity to do a short video. Martha Stewart comes to mind, see if she's out of jail yet. A 2 minute video of Martha Stewart gift wrapping one of your products - can you get links to that?
Oh, what about how to wrap funny shaped objects - show how to gift wrap a broom or a rocking chair. Find something funny to wrap as an example. I suspect there's a better way to do it than the way I would which is surround it with paper, squish the paper so it conforms to the contours, then tape the livin' bejeepers out of it (You'll never guess what I got you!). And of course if you gift wrap a broom, then you want to use a big brand name broom and approach them (and everyone who links to them or mentiones them) for a link as well. "We gift wrapped your broom! HaHa! Can I have a link please?".
More indepth, if you have specific items you want to rank for, do an article on how to wrap that item. Say coffee cups - write an article on how to gift wrap a coffee cup. Then from within the article, link to your coffee cups for sale page. Then go looking for websites that mention coffee cups in any fashion - and go ask them for a link.
Find blogs in your area that talk about gifts or gift wrapping. Offer to write an article for them on how to gift wrap. Give yourself a link of course.
That's just one thing - gift wrapping - and you can clearly build an entire link building campaign around just that one idea In six months when you've got that tapped out, do it all over again with 'how to tie and create bows'. That'll take you out to next summer :).
I been reading your posts about link development and I wanna thank you for the great suggestions and ideas that got a lot of us thinking creatively about link development.
After reading one of your posts, I approached the local university and suggested to do a report that would help their students if they'd publish it and link to my site, they agreed. And I am working on the report now.
You said that link development is about sales and marketing, while we techies approach it as a technical problem. There is a lot of truth to what you said. But there is a dilemma that I, and maybe some other people around here, face. And that is I started exploring online money making opportunities partly because I don't want to have to rely on talking directly to individuals for the success of my efforts. Link development with your approach, takes me back to doing what I wanted to avoid in the first place.
Search engines rank pages according to what other people think about them, so it makes sense to say, then, that we should go out and convince people about the value of our websites.
Your approach is probably correct, but now you know why I, and maybe some other people around here, resist link development using the "marketing and sales" approach.
What does google do? It wants to find the best content for its users.
Thus: If you want to work with google, do not try to trick the system with irrelevant links (regardless if directories, social media or whatever), but to provide the things google wants to provide for its users.
We all win - or you end up in a neverending chase.
Its a great medium to link out to related resources or related sites I am just not sure what the best way to get inbounds to the blog or the man site.
Or top 10 greatest gag gifts (then approach bloggers etc to link to that). Or something related to great gifts or great gift givers of all time (I'm thinking something like did Kennedy ever give Marilyn Monroe a gift? Get your mind out of the gutters people).
An article on the meaning of the phrase 'never look a gift horse in the mouth' might give you some places to get links.
Speaking of that phrase, I expect that came from the trojan horse story. That's got to be the most well known 'gift of all time'. I'm no comedian myself, but a really funny flash or video or cartoon based on the trojan horse story may have some viral capability as well. Publish it on your site, then go looking for links. Or email it to all your friends with a link to the video on your site, tell them to pass it on (I'm no viral expert, so suggest investigating those methods seperately). Or maybe a trojan horse flash game?
nandalinnaung, no offense but you do realize the big G will start discounting social media sites too? It's only a matter of time. Just like people abused meta tags and now they're discounted. People abused directories so now they're discounted. I suspect blogs, social bookmark sites, etc. will be next. May as well take the links now while it's still working though :-) But in the long run continue to get one-way links from related niche sites.
Swanny007 - while I agree that the link love from social networks and social bookmarks is fairly unhelpful, these channels can be a great way to distribute good content and build awareness with webmasters and bloggers who will then link back to you in a natural way if they like what they see.
Google loves those sort of links IMHO.

"So, please do social bookmarking and search engine submission, also build up the backlinks in great PR sites."
This is not good information.
A)no social bookmarking site gives direct value from a link anymore and the chance of getting bloggers and others to link to you based on a social bookmark submission is rare. Submit only to RELEVANT niche bookmarking sites and make sure your content is "news worthy" if you submit to a more general site
B)search engine submissions? don't waste your time or a dime on this. It will do NOTHING for you.
C)"build up the backlinks in great PR sites" How? Why? PR matters very little first of all, secondly if you do buy links it should be on relevant sites without many other links for sale and they should not look bought (footer links for example are not so good). If you aren't talking about paid links then how do you get these "high pr" links you speak of?
My point of this post - be careful what advice you give! People base business decisions (rightly or wrongly) based on your advice. Furthermore, as a professional SEO it's getting increasingly annoying competing against snakeoil salesmen, well-meaning incompetents, and out-and-out scammers. I have very little legit competition (as their pricing is either similar or more than mine) but I lose deals to those claiming for $500 / month they'll get any site #1 in Google for any keyword
I also CREATE YouTube videos (someone has to) and post embeds of those and allow others to embed them.
I only recently found out that I got free backlinks from YouTube for embedding the video and that is why I am posting this here.
You could write a ton of articles like that. They'd need to be good enough so that if I actually didn't know what to get, by reading your article and following it, I'd look like a hero. Either that, or the article should be 10 funny things or bloopers. In any case, again with articles like that you can contact bloggers and point them to the articles; basically begging for links, but from far better places than what you mentioned in your original post.
If your top 10 lists contain items that you actually sell, then you drive links to the article, and the article links to your sales pages.
Buying links buying links are also beneficial but only if you follow these rules:
Stay under the radar (don't buy too many links at the start, so that your website gets banned)
Make sure the link that is pointing to your website looks natural. (by natural i mean the link should look as if the webmaster is pointing a resource out, just like a link you get from a blogger when he links to one of your popular topic).
Make sure the website you are buying link from is worth the price you are paying, you can check the age, .gov, .edu, .org links and the reputation it has in its niche.
Vary the anchor text a lot.
Make sure you distribute links evenly to your website, just like a natural linking process is going on. Just do not keep on linking to a single page for one keyword term you want to rank for.
