Naming muliple pages

Hello. I name pages by keywords but should I put 1, -1 or _1 / 2, -2 or _2 etc at the end ? Also what about naming directories, graphics, jpegs and java pop ups etc within a site. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Caution: I haven't done any experimenting, just developed a habit and it's served me well. Multiple copies of TestPage could be named TestPageRed TestPageBlue etc. I try to use a "third word" that identifies what's unique on the page (makes it easier to recognize/remember) and still has some keyword value. The major SEs have gotten much more sophisticated in the last year or so and I BELIEVE most don't give the domain name or the URL much weight.

Dashes or underscores as in -1 and _2 are probably OK with most SEs, but I'm SURE text is OK everywhere. I'd avoid any other punctuation characters though.

Thanks for the reply. I notice you used capitalisation to separate two words in a page name - is that also a necessity for spiders ?

It's easier for me! Some spiders may differentiate and I hope they do! :)

I use Dave's method sort of. First off I highly recomend always using lower case for file names and page names. I forget which server OS (I want to say un*x, no flames please) will take the name call for what it is. I.E.- Hyperlink calls www.yourdomain.com/whatever.htm. If your page is named WHATEVER.HTM I believe you will get a 404.

I normaly put all images under \images, I put Java script under JS and so on. On all images I make use of ALT tags by using keywords (I have been told it does not carry very much weight anymore but every bit helps IMHO), I make sure that the ALT tags on a page are not just the same phrase over and over. I make sure they are non repeating. On picture names I use keywords again like mensrings-comfort.jpg.

I never thought about pop ups.

which aggrees runonwords are the way to go but hyphens can be problematic for AOL. Can spiders read the pagename with numbers at the end. ie artdeco1, artdeco2, artdeco3, etc. TIA.

I have read that filename1 could produce a flag on the "1" but that an underscore is better than a hyphen in separating a filename. So would artdeco_1 be the safest way to go or would it produce a flag ?

My pages are produced offline from a DB and automatically named with 1,2,3 etc at the end, soon I will have alot of pages but would one,two,three etc be safer ?

I am sure this could be an issue for others so I'll try to complete this thread but any help would be much appreciated.
