Another newcomer I'm afraid.

Just trying to get my head around meta tag basics with respect to Google and have read through many previous forums. Key five take-outs for me have been:

1. In the grand scheme of things, meta tags aren't that important (in spite of what various designers have told me)
2. All in all, title & decription are the main ones to worry about
3. 60 and 200 charas respectively is about right
4. Keywords meta tags aren't worth much, but you might as well spend 10 minutes on them; 20 words/150 characs is max for keyword tags; definitely no dupes (some SEs might down-list you)
5. "Robots" is the other one

Any comments please?!

Hi Aquitaine,
Welcome to Webmaster World.

The list shows that you have been doing a lot of reading here. Your list is what you need to start with.
From my point of view, using meta tags is good SEO. We never really know what Google and the others are really looking for.
Don’t forget a robots.txt file. The meta tag isn’t enough.
