Is this legitimate use of keywords?

Does google frown upon descriptive keywords that aren't linked to anything like this being placed on your front page:and I don't mean going overboard with it.

¦ widget ¦ blue widget ¦ green widget ¦ red widget ¦ etc..

If they're there to benefit your visitors then it is not spam.

Why not have a paragraph at the bottom which reads :

"Keywords : widgets, red widgets, blue widgets"

It quickly summarises the content of the page, and that can benefit both users and spiders.

Not sure how the usability gurus would view it, though :-)

Do you mena something like the line of text just below the first paragraph on this page [www-db.stanford.edu]?

That's exactly what I mean.I'm just curious as to where google would draw the line between placing keywords on your page that benefit the surfer and "keyword stuffing" as opposed to inserting keywords into carefully structured paragraphs.

It's not keyword stuffing if users can see it. Since it is a strategy used by the founders of Google, I don't think you will have a problem.
