Using Keywords in the Query String - Dump the PageID=123?

Polishing before the next crawl

Hi Folks, this is my inaugural post. Glad to meet you all.

I've got a site which opened last week. It's my first ever commercial site and I've been excited by my placing in my keyword searches quite well via Freshbot. I've spent a lot of time tweaking keywords in the content, trying to get my titles and descriptions just right, things like that.

And here's my problem. I'm suddenly seized by a need to change my navigation links. Right now all my products are listed on pages with addresses like :

www.sitename.com/product.asp?PageID=123

And I'm thinking I could do a lot better for my keywords if I changed them to:

www.sitename.com/product.asp?Name=Blue%20Widgets

This would take enough work that I would like to check with the veterans here before I jump in there. So these are my questions:

1) Do keywords in the URL in this manner help my rankings in the engines?

2) Some of my product names can be long. At what point does that length become a liability?

3) Are there any issues with the?Name=Blue%20Widgets format? Will spiders interpret these URLS properly, follow them, and give me points for the keyword appearance?

That's it for now. I searched through the site many times using different search words trying to find the answer and came up with only a few tangents which didn't quite answer me. I hope someone can give me a point in the right direction.

Thanks,
Darryl
