I adopted the following keyword strategy for a comparatively new website. Please let me know what you think:

Keywords search strategy adopted:
The strategy to search for keywords was mainly executed with the following objectives:
1. relevant keywords (find keywords relevant to business, and its product)
2. searchable keywords (find keywords having some search-ability)
3. find keywords for which target website is already ranking (high or low) in Google

Steps followed to achieve the above objectives:

Finding Relevant keywords and keywords with search-ability:
Using Google’s Keyword Planner two keyword-lists were generated (under the option of Search for new keyword and group ideas)
a. first keyword list was generated by specifying the main product keyword
b. second keyword list was generated by specifying the website address (as landing page )

Both of these keyword lists contained the Avg. Monthly Searches figure for the suggested keywords. So it became possible to determine the search-ability of the keywords.

Finding keywords for which target website is already ranking:
c. I extracted Search Queries Report in Google Webmaster Tools for the month of July’2014, which gave me approx. 500 keywords.

After getting the keywords from steps a, b and c, I checked the commonality and relevance in terms appearing in all three keyword-lists.

The metrics I am considering for shortlisting the keywords are:
- Avg. Monthly Searches figure as reported by Google Keyword Planner
- Impressions and average ranking of Keywords as reported in Search Queries Report of Google Webmaster Tools. It will be more practical to target keywords already ranking between second and fifth page whilst giving a consideration to the nature of competing websites ranking adjacent and overall competition.

Please let me know if I am missing something, and your valuable suggestions. However it is important to note that the website has been launched recently and this is the very first round of keyword shortlisting. But I welcome your ideas and look forward to your suggestions.

Many thanks,
Vani
