English/Spanish Keywords

Optimizing Keywords for 2 Languages

Here's the situation: My company has 2 consumer sites, one in English, One in Spanish. The English version has high rankings in search engines. The Spanish version is just being developed.

Should we mix English and Spanish meta tags or just use Spanish on the Spanish site?
Most Spanish-Americans search in English but you never know?

Thanks!

If you have the english site for english kw and the spanish for spanish - AND give the arriving visitors immidiately the option of changing to the other language you should be fine...

I'm uncomfortable with mixing languages on sites, it's not the best start for promoting a site with directories etc.

I'd optimise both sites for their respective language and target market and let them profit from each other.

Hi Gshak,

Welcome to Webmasterworld :)

I have come across this problem before and the route I took is as Heini suggested.

I set up 2 sites and used a splash page for language selection, to optimise (UK spelling:)) one site for keywords in 2 different languages would be a major drag not to mention very confusing for the visitor.

Good luck whichever route you decide to take. :)
