How to target keywords on the Home Page

Hey,

Let me take an example to explain my situation:

I have a site on widgets called mysite.com

I have created different pages like: /overview, /news, /forum, /blog and /classifieds etc.

I understand what keywords to target for each of the sub-pages, example, target "widget news" for /news pages similarly, I am targeting "widgets" for my /overview pages.

I am confused as to what keywords to target on our home page which has a summary of the entire website.

Should I go ahead and again use "widgets" as the primary keyword on the home page as well. Would it not compete with the /overview pages on rankings.

Please advice.

From my experience the home page is usually the strongest page so what I usually do is to add the keywords from my other pages on the home page that way users will understand what your site is about.
for example your title could be:

Widgets World ¦ Widget News, Forum, Blog & Classifieds

Desc. Widget World offers latest widget news, forum, blog and widget classified ads and more..

or something to that effect.

as your site grows and becomes more popular then your internal pages (categories) should start to rank well.

I get this: To target multiple keywords on my home page, I will have to consider various anchor text in my home page link building process.

My question: will my home page or my /overview page rank for widgets? as homepage has more spread out keyword targeting. Hope both these pages do not conflict for rankings?

its hard to say, but like i said since the homepage is usually the strongest it might, but if you get some good links to your internal pages they might outrank your home page. or your home page might rank for widgets in general but your overview page might rank for something more specific. you just have to do it and see what happens. the way i see it is if you start ranking for the keywords you want and it brings in traffic it wouldent matter what page brings it in.
