I have recently been checking some key word phrases with overture.

If their search tool says that the phrase 'Blue Widgets' was searched on 10,000 times in a month, on the overture network - how many searches (approximately) do you think google experienced for the same term in the same month

There really isn't any way to come up with an average number just from using the Overture tool.

Overture numbers are heavily inflated and the amount of inflation will vary depending on the popularity/competitivness of the term.

The best thing to do is to use the keyword tool included in Google's original Adwords program.

[adwords.google.com...]

The impression count will give you a rough idea as to the number of searches that take place at Google.

Thanks Web Guerrilla

I have signed up for an adwords account just now - but can't find the search tool

Is this only available in the original adwords account - I've signed up for the new account

I've tried to log in with my username at the URL you've given me but it won't work

If you go to the Google home page and then click on the "Advertise With Us" link you will find the link to the old program way down in the lower left corner. Click on it, and then walk through the pages (you don't actually have to create an ad to get to the keyword tool).

I've taken a look around the old adwords section - I can't seem to find the keywords tool anywhere!

I will go back and try again - maybe I'm not looking hard enough

- click on link to "Advertise With Us"
- on lower left of the page you get, click on "The Original AdWords Program"
- on the next page, click on "Create & Preview Ads"
- on the next page, click the "Continue" button

Thanks everyone

Finally found it - just one small question after experimenting with a few phrases ....

If it returns a result of zero, does that mean literally zero - I think I read in another post that less than 50 results was reported as 'zero'

I have searched on a phrase that admittedly is not as popular as 'Britney Spears porn' - but it is hard to believe that the phrase 'hotel advertising' gets zero searches - I am not even asking for an exact match.

As I remember, the threshold is something like 4,100 or 4,200 "impressions" a month... which I've always taken to mean searches that would cause your ad to appear.

HMMMM

Makes things a bit tricky if you are dealing with very niche phrases

You don't know if you can expect 30 or 3000 searches per month - both will show up as zero!

thanks for the advice
