How many times when is a keyword combo?

Hello all, I have a new question, it's about the use of the ALT atribute. I have read here that is not advisable to use the same keyword more than three times inside the ALT tags of every page. But I'm not sure if this rule is about the use of single word more than three times (i.e: birds) or is also valid when you use a keyword combo(i.e: tropical birds, greedy birds, sea birds etc...) So, my question is.... If you use the keyword combinated with other words how many times can you use it?

Thanks,

In alt tags? I'd only do it twice. The three times rule used to be for meta keywords.

Hi Brett, thanks for the reply but I'm still with my doubt. Two times if you have only one word in alt tag or in any case?

Use the Alt tag like you would with visible text.

If widget was visible

widget widget widget widget widget widget widget widget widget widget

it isn't appealing to the visitor nor the bot.

Being hidden doesn't change anything.

When in doubt... refer to Brett's answer.

Buckworks, maybe you didn't understand my post. When I was talking about a "reliable" answer I was not trying to say that Brett's answer was not reliable. I was just trying to get an answer to my second question. No more...

Regards and thanks for the replys.

Digimon just to be a little more clear.

widget

blue widget

widget blue

blue and black

black and blue widget

blue and blue

widget blue

blue widget

widget

will probably be ok... don't push your luck though,

in the long run if the pic isn't a "blue widget" or a "widget blue"

then don't call it that. Put a blue widget on the page that way it's more appropriate.

In saying that ... a 100 x 1 pixel separation line may be a "separation line" but alt="separation line" doesn't realy mean anything, so it could be use as the page title or page theme or one of you "widget".

Well, Fathom, thanks a lot for the clear reply. That was exactly what I was asking for... I have a site about downloads and I've got some images linking to Drivers Download, Antivirus Download, etc... and I was afraid to use the tag too much and be penalized.
