handling multiple spellings of same word?

One of my keywords is spelled in to ways. With either "ay" or "ei" in the word.

Im already ranking very well for "ay", how can i target "ei" without damaging my "ay" rank?

What is the best practice?

I would assume the best practice would be to leave my content as it is and do link building with the new keyword, but I do think that the page content + link anchor text goes hand in hand...

This is for existing old pages and not new pages.

Putting misspellings (or even alternative spellings) on a page can look unprofessional ...

Considering how few pages will 'compete' for a misspelling, this may be enough and you may not need to build links for it. Google *does* recognize misspellings in most cases and offers the correct one to searchers.

thanks for your input, although this is not a misspelling, more a variation like color and colour
