keeping track of keywords

I feel I know almost enough about SEOs to start some record-keeping.

My first impulse is to use Excel, but since I'm not at all familiar with creating sheets, I thought I'd ask what other folks do.

Is that in the end, the best tool for keeping records of clients' keywords and rankings over time?

Any and all suggestions welcome.
