what is considered highly competative

In my industry, the money term is searched for about 20,000 times a month during the busy season, and there are about 15-20 main competitors in that sector.

But what about everyone else? Is 20,000 considered a poultry sum compared to the vast majority?

And what about your competitors... do you have 15-20 serious ones, or 50+?. Note that just because Google shows 68,000,000 results, doesn't mean they are all competitors.

I only have 1 real competitor, mine is just information based.

And completly a HUGE niche market.

One site I work with closely is in a very, very competitive market, definitely not a niche, too many competitors to count, where the broad keyword matches can get 100,000's of hits every month. Of course the the long tail results are much lower, but they still have many competitors too. It's a market in which we are just beginning to seed, it should be very interesting to see the two man team gets on against so many others/big players.
