Keyword phrases or single word ?

For the keyword tag, should I use single words or phrases ?

Hi,

Say it is known that users are finding the target website when searching in altavista uk for 'big fat yellow bananas'

Should my keyword tag be like this

big, fat, yellow, bananas

or should I put

big fat yellow bananas, bigger fat yellow bananas

or should I use both. If I should use both, which should come first, single words or phrases ??

I am targeting AV uk, but I assume it will also work for google and others..

I remember numerous threads regarding this subject, and I think that there are certain people who do it one way and some the other. I don't know how much of a difference it makes.

This is one way to get the most out of it:

instead of using this,

keywords="big fat, yellow bannana, bigger fat, yellow bannana"

use this,

keywords="big fat yellow bannana bigger fat yellow bannana"

If you use it this way, I think that the search engine can use different varieties of the keywords in the tag.
