Submitting keyword vs phrases

When submiting key words to search engines the words are to be separated by spaces only, so how do I differentiate a phrase or names so they make sense.

I am very new at this so please try to bear with me if i'm not addressing your question properly - I think that it would be a keyword meta tag. Example if I am submitting several keywords that are meta- tags, like: beads,imported,bone etc. and I also want to submit 2 or more words: prayer beads, tibetan malas,the art of happiness etc when submitting some search engines specify to use spaces only, no commas.
So how can I differentiate between a phrase and a single word. Hope this makes sense.

I believe in this instance a search engine will look at all your keywords and compare all the different combinations of those words. For example, your keywords include:

red blue green yellow widget thing stuff

If someone types "yellow stuff", I believe the SE would be able to see that your keywords specify these two words and thus your site will appear in the results.
