Hi

My Question is: If we merge 2 keywords into 1 and use it as anchor text, will it help me in targeting both the keywords?

----------------For example----------------
Now suppose I have to optimize a website for the word "Buy new widget".

Here are the stats of some of the keywords related to Buy New widget:

==== buying a new widget
Competition : 675 pages
Searches : 4426 per month

==== widget buying guide
Competition: 676 pages
Searches: 1088 per month

In this case, both keywords are good as number of competition is attackable and Searches are more than its number of competing pages.

Now, if we merge the both keywords and make an anchor text like : "Guide to buying a new widget" - Will this anchor text get me credit on both the keywords above?

Thanks
Ricky

Instead of combining both the keywords and diluting the whole page weight i would suggest to make individual pages for both the phrases.

" Instead of combining both the keywords and diluting the whole page weight i would suggest to make individual pages for both the phrases."

Ricky_G asked about optimizing his anchor text and not about optimizing his website for the keywords mentioned.
He wants to start building(or changing) a link campaign so he has to know what anchor text he will give to his link partners.

I am having the same problem.I want to optimize for "Green Apples" and "Red Apples".(Just an example).

Which would make a better anchor text:

1)"Rani's Green Apples and Red Apples Store"
2)"Rani's Green and Red Apples Store"

Hi Ricky,
I agree with Rani & suggest that the anchor text u have thought of will definately help u in optimiziing both the key words. an example: I was searching for the keyword HOME on google a few months back. IN the search result the no.1 site was of NASA, competing pages were 6170000000. Imagine such a competition. but what has nasa to do with home. The reason I found out was the home page of nasa was linked by many pages with the word HOME included in the anchor text.
So the conclusion is in anchor text only keywords has to be used as all the words are optimized.
For me ur anchor text would be " New Widget buying Guide"

Keep Sharing

Okay Rani got your point. I will suggest:

Green and Red Apples Store by Rani - If products are searched more
Rani's Green and Red Apples Store - If products are searched specifically from that company

For Ricky_G "new widget buying guide" will be the optimised anchor text.

Pankaj_lis's point is also true and that is why you have to optimised your internal linking structure with your targeted keywords first.

I'll try to ask it differently.
First of all lets make a distinction between keywords and
keyword combinations."Apples" is a keyword and "Green" is a keyword."Green Apples" is a keyword combination that people might use in the SE to find my website.

When i design my anchor text i want to capture two keyword combinations in one shot.

My keyword combinations are:

"Green apples"
"Red Apples"

There are two possible anchor texts for these keyword combinations:
1)"Green and Red Apples"
2)Green Apples and Red Apples"

Which of these anchors would do a better job?

Note:
Possibility #1 (Green and Red apples) sounds better to the ear and i think is also more grammatically correct.
But in terms of squeezing the most out of the anchor text, will it do the job?

According to my observations for Google I will suggest to stick to "short and simple" i.e. "green and red apples"
