not getting banned

submitting variations of the same page

Hi all,
I am new to the site, and I have a question that I am sure most of the group will be able to answer, but never-the-less I have to ask. If I have one page with a set of keywords, can I take that same exact page, change the keywords and possibly the rest of the meta tags, and resubmit it without risking being banned for spamming.

Welcome, agerhart! You've definitely come to the right place! I'm not one of the big resident SEO experts, but I do know the answer to that question...

Don't risk it. Your pages will almost definitely be dropped as soon as the SEs notice the duplication, and you risk having your domain banned completely.

Most of the search engines place very little importance on the meta tags these days... mainly because putting a lot of importance on the keyword meta tag makes it way too easy to do things like you just described.

In general, that type of approach isn't the best strategy. If the differences between the pages is not that great, you run the risk of getting penalized for duplicate content.

The dgree to which each engine can pick up duplicate content varies, but none of them like it.

Seriously, if you're in charge of SEO for your boss, make sure he understands how constantly the field changes, and knows you'll have to spend time on research to do an effective job... then spend all the time you can spare reading the threads in the SEO World forums!
