When updating templates or even just saving and reopening the files, Dreamweaver changing French specific letters in the Head of html file (title, description) to letters that look like English. The same problem in the body. For example variations of "e" and "o" with marks on top are being changed to just "e" and "o".
I am using charset=utf-8. I am not French specific letter with "é"(the same as "e" with mark on top). I have English based programs.
I hope I was able to state my problem.
Anything I can do to resolve this?

Having said that I am using an "azerty" keyboard ..and when using DW ..my DW mx version is in English ..then again my "box" is in "franglais" ..but thats just me ..;)
If you would like to "sticky mail" me in French ( if you feel more comfortable in it? ..you are welcome to do so ..although that said ,your English is fine )..
Another thought ..what is the installed language of your OS ..if it is English and you have no support for French language installed it may be that there lies the problem?
I find that when I want to use accents and get the correct html coding, I need to input them in design view and not code view (unless of course you are writing é in the code).
I use charset=iso-8859-1.

Yes it could be. As all of my sites are mainly in English and Russian, I have English OS and Dreamweaver. I am just translating my main site to French. Maybe if I installed French version of Dreamweaver, I would have no problems. But it is too much of a hustle.

I was also working on the head and body section of html in the design view. But after the page is reloaded by template modification, the head section changes.
Well, I will have to use "é" variation in my html code and use charset=iso-8859-1. It takes extra steps though, to get the proper coding in "head" section of html. First I have to type the text in the design view (which in the code section appears in "é" variation), then copy paste in the coding section from the body to the head section.
But by installing support for French via microsofts "update" area ..the problem goes away ..
My other machine is has a French language OS installed in one partition and an English OS installed in another partition ..one the French side I did along time ago install a "support for English language pack" from M$ ..the next time of switching on all my Gui's in all progs ..that is to say DW , photoshop , word , you name it ..all came up with the options in franglais ..
ie : in my drop down boxes I have .."file" ..and also "dossier" , "delete" and also "envoyer" etc etc ..see what I mean ;)
Set up this way DW doesn't alter code ..although it does take some getting used to ..even the help files are in two languages sometimes in the same sentence they "switch" from English to French ..
The other benefit of this ( from my point of view ) was that the translation into French of the original 'doze OS was very approximate ( appeared to have been done using an English/French dictionary ..word by word ..or "babel fish" or some such horror ) and can lead to confusion ..having the files available in English confirmed to me what I thought they were actually supposed to be when I saw them in french for the first time ...
XP is even worse as regards the translation ..
I know that is the most horrible "cobbled together" sort of Microsoft influenced work around ..but then again it works ..;)
Thank you for your comments. Translating to French is just a small project and I really do not want installing update for French and start getting English/French menu. In addition, I do not speak French.
The idea was to translate my English/Russian site to French, to see additional bookings from French speaking travelers. My translation to Russian (which I speak)seems to be picking up. Hopefully the same will be with French. I may start a discussion on the effectiveness of multilingual travel sites on the different board.
Try specifiying the "'doze 1252" charset tho in your headers ..it should avoid you having to do the install of "support" ..

Sticky me if you want me to check out your French pages ( as long as there aren't too many of 'em ;-) for possible errors in translation as you don't speak French ..won't cost you ..I can do it while I'm having my mandatory 1 litre of " stand your spoon up in it " coffee in the morning ...

I have specified charset doze Windows 1252 and saved and opened the file with "é" in the title. Guess what, it turn it to regular "e"
