Hello everyone!

I currently use Opera, Firefox, and MSIE as my browsers of choice. I am currently having a problem with Internet Explorer. Whenever I try to go to any site on the internet, it gives me the following:

The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
See if your Internet connection settings are being detected. You can set Microsoft Windows to examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings (if your network administrator has enabled this setting).
Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options.
On the Connections tab, click LAN Settings.
Select Automatically detect settings, and then click OK.
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer

I am sure all of you have seen this error message at one time or another, but with me it is happening all the time. What can I do about it? Thanks in advance!

For some reason IE is not accessing the web in that moment. How long since you cleared the IE cache? IE can get really weird when the cache gets full.

Also, are you running a Firewall? If so, is there a chance that you've accidentally banned IE from accessing the web?

ISPs often provide diagnostic software. I can't remember ever finding it particularly useful but it may turn up something. (They tend to be geared towards IE.)

You may need restore the IE with default settings to see if it works. If not, re-register the following dlls:

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll

Thank you all very much for your replies!

tedster- Yes, I have cleared the cache and cookies, and it does not seem to work. The firewall I use is Zone Alarm Paid Edition, which I have disabled.

kaled- I use a very large Canadian ISP (Bell Sympatico), and have called them asking if they installed any diagnostic software that could make this problem. They said no...

flashfan- I am afraid I do not know what you mean. I am not very windows-savvy. Could you please explain?

Kodaks, to carry out flashfan's suggestion, simply go to start > run and type in each line as flashfan has written them. Hit enter after each one and a little confirmation box should come up.

To restore the defaults, go to tools > internet options > advanced, and down the bottom is the 'restore defaults' button.

You might also try the Microsoft System File Checker. It can recover corrupted .dll files among other things.

Thanks, 2oddsox!

I just tried that, and it does not seem to work. Is there any way to remove and then reinstall IE?

[added]tedster-
I will try that now.[/added]

Is there any way to remove and then reinstall IE?

Go into control panel > add/remove programs, and then highlight Microsoft Internet Explorer in your list of programs. Click on the change/remove button, and you should be given an option to repair IE. Pretty much does the same thing.

I am running windows 2000 and I am having the same trouble. I tried using another browser and the same thing happened. I tried re-registering and didn't work. Of course I am new to windows 2000 so I might have been re-registering wrong or something. Any ideas what I could do?

I also should have mentioned that I get this error when I click on links in my favorites, when I type an address in the address bar and when I click on links. I usually have to re-type or refresh a couple of times for it to actually go to the page.

This is strange...when I look in the Add Remove Programs, Microsoft Internet Explorer does not show up. Why would that be?

IE doesn't always appear in the proggy list. What version of IE are you running, and on what version of Windows?

If you took Tedster's advice and ran sfc, it should have overwritten any dud files you may have had. If you didn't, go to start > run and type:

sfc /scannow

(you might need your installation disk handy)

I'm not sure if there is a more refined way to simply target the IE files with sfc, but the above method should cover it.
