I have a site, which I inherited/took over: https://www.example.com/business/topic the site in question is in Spanish, yet the footer is in English. There is another site that is in all Spanish: https://espanol.example.com/business/topic, including the footer. In both sites in the upper left corner, the Espanol link takes you to the other site. optimum takes you to espanol.optimum and vice versa.

There is no hreflang tag for either site. It would be greatly appreciated if someone could help in getting this straightened out.

Google uses the rel="alternate" hreflang="x" attributes to serve the correct language or regional URL in results. But before using this metatag you should ensure that language and links are using the language you specify. I'd suggest you translate the site's language on the https://example.com/ site.

I don't see a reason to have 'both' sites if they are both in one language except the footer. The links between them would seem to confuse their purpose when both sites are in the same language. It looks like someone had planned to translate the contents of the https://www.example.com site to English? then it would make sense to use the hreflang to have search results for English and Spanish readers.
