I know we are not supposed to post links, but I found an article, which I believe is great and was worth sharing : [labnol.org...]

Whenever I see a webside using "typewriter" quotes and 'straight' apostrophes, my regard for that site--whatever it may be, however worthy in other regards--drops a little.

A couple of days ago I found a ' on one of my pages. I was so horrified, I did a systematic search of the whole directory to grab any others I’d overlooked. (There were several--all, I think, in excerpts of quoted online material. Hmph.)

Although I could readily type them in, I continue to use the entities — – and   because they’re indistinguishable in a fixed-pitch font, as used for editing. But why on earth would you use entitites for curly quotes and apostrophes?

Both are correct, just NEVER mix them in the same document! I use straight because it sets tighter than curly... and most of my content by guest writers arrives in that fashion.
