W3c validator and Html code issue

html 4.01shows end greater symb, but w3c validator wants that to be removed

Hi All,

To be frank I have only basic html knowledge. When I check my client website for w3c validation errors. W3c validator shows errors for all the end / and > symbols , sample error message.

In this above code, the ending > is the error highlighted

In this above code, the ending / is the error highlighted.

Like this it show nearly 50 errors.

If I remove those, would there be any problem or can I remove that and upload.

Please let me know what would be the issue and what should I do.

If I understand you correctly (not sure)...

/> is used by xhtml doctypes but not by html doctypes. You should either replace /> with > (recommended) or change the doctype to xhtml.
