IE and FF - why do fonts appear more jagged in FF

in ie 7 and above, the text appears smoothly without any jagged edges , is it a plugin or something.

Do they have such better text presentation in Firefox

You can set your preferred font style in some browsers. Unless the webmaster fixes the font on a set face, the font will vary between browsers on default settings.

This may also be an issue with the way your Windows OS is set with regard to font smoothing [google.com].

IE has font smoothing by default, which looks better on LCD display. Firefox has the traditional font appearance, which looks sharper on CRT monitors. Not sure how to enable font smoothing for Firefox. Maybe it's an OS setting.

What OS are you using?

If it's XP try enabling Clear Type in the OS

Places with ClearType settings:

1) Control Panel > ClearType Tuning
2) Right-click anywhere in Desktop > Properties > Appearance > Effects > Use the following method to smoothe the edges of screen fonts
3) IE7/8 > Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Multimedia > Always Use ClearType
