Google doesn't want to repeat that mistake, and as a result, he said, "we're betting big on HTML 5."

and as I only found out today, though I don't know when it actually happened, Google Search is using an HTML5 doctype, guess they're backing up their claim.

What DTD was Google using before?

They did not use any DTD, if I recall correctly.

Some half a year ago they had the HTML5 empty doctype, then they dropped it, and, apparently, now it's back.
