I want to uninstall IE. By doing so I uinstall a file that let's me view my windows website style. I remember an article that said this file along with another one was only necessary to view websites (or the file that is standard use among all browsers) and you didn't have to have IE. Can anyone help with this? Thanks

To the best of my knowledge, IE has been integrated into the Operating System since Windows 98.. but maybe this link may help!

This article describes how to uninstall Internet Explorer 5. [support.microsoft.com]

I've used 98lite [litepc.com] successfully on a few machines.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld Wicked,
Don't forget to read paynt's welcome post [webmasterworld.com].

Just out of curiousity why do you want to run windows without IE, but want to view your windows web site style?

Mostly because I'm spoiled by the thumbnail viewing and detail information, without having to rightclick and go into Properties. I'm also tired of IE security flaws as well because I got some kind of trojan that took over IE, and implemented a .exe file called newxplr in Windows. The newxplr checked the IE dir to see if it was there, if not it generated another one, that kept sending me to search-explorer.net. I'm sick of the ****. I'm went to 98lite, but they're still working on the version for winxp. Thanks for the replies so far, cool place.

I wouldn't uninstall IE since it is very integrated into the OS>

If you don't want to use IE, that's different, you can dowload Opera, Netscape, or 100 other browsers. Just be sure to set the other browser as your default for everything else.

txbakers hit it - uninstalling IE is fairly radical, and IE is so integrated into the OS (the thumbnail view that you like!) that it'll be very messy.

You can download and use any number of other browsers as your default - may I recommend either Opera or Mozilla!

You should also look at your antivirus software, and make sure it is set to scan email attachments before they are opened. As a personal precaution, you should always double check an attachment (by running it through your AV software again), and see if the sender is even someone you know. Watch out for dubiously worded Subject lines and Body text like "Have you seen this..." or "I thought that this would be something you are interested in".

Also, virii are often sent as .exe's, .scr's (screensavers), or a double extension to confuse people into thinking that they are something else, eg: .gif.vb

Here is the only link [groups.google.com] I could find on your spyware. It is important that you update your Internet Explorer with the latest security patches. If you visit sketchy web sites (bjorn/juarez sites) their scripts attempt all sorts of security exploits.

Also, perform a brute find looking for files that contain the text "newexplr" and "search-explorer.net". Do the same for your registry. This will give some ideas on how to snoop your system to get rid of the Trojan.
