I am currently working on a website where the client would like to have a small flash file inserted on his index page. (150x200 pixels)

My concern is that if a site visitor does not have the flash plugin, he will only see a broken image link.

Is there a (free) script available anywhere that will detect a browser for the flash plugin, and place either a .swf file or a jpg file on the index page depending on the result?
(for SEO reasons, I am not looking for 2 different pages to be redirected to - I need it to actually swap the image)

Have a look in the flash publish settings, under html templates there should be a choice that says flash w/image, this will creat the script for you!

I'm a little confused, dhdweb.

I dont have a flash program, I am being handed an swf file to place on an hTML page I've made. (I'm not a flash designer...)

Are you saying that I need to contact the flash person and let them know that they can create the script for me using their program?

Any Flash programmer could tell you how to do it. I'm not one so I can't give you the code, but I know that there's just a change that you make to the HTML where the Flash piece is embedded in your page. There's probably some advice and sample code on the Macromedia site, they've got heaps of documentation and code for developers.

Also try Flash Kit [flashkit.com]

Or the guy who made the .swf file should be able to provide the code.
