Coming soon index page...

Hi,

Wasn't sure what forum to stick this post in...

I have a new domain name parked on my intended host. I have been asked by the account to have the host apply the domain to an I.P. and then throw up a "coming soon" page.

Easy enough but...

What happens if a spider hits the I.P. (I have a few sites getting ready to point to it) and then reads the page? Will it be detrimental in the long run or should I just say OK, no problem?

Confused,

Brian

Brian, I've got no idea about the pointing part because I've never pointed more than one site to an IP. I'm lost on that subject.

I have put up a temporary page while a site was under construction, a short sweet Inktomi-type introductory page descriptive of what the site was to be about, with the first run of graphics, and put up a "coming soon" link from my portfolio page. I sometimes do this if there's been enough paid up front to cover and to get a head start and save myself some time if it'll be a week or two until the site's finished.

Sometimes it's gotten rankings from that temporary page and I ended up using it pretty much as-is and just added a photo or two and links to the rest of the site. It depends on the time-line.

It works to a degree on non-competitive type sites, and at least gives an email contact for the client on a temporary basis. In one case the person was having business cards printed that week and needed the URL to be included; it hurt nothing to do an advance page, and I'd been compensated partially, so it was no risk of loss to anyone.

It's also convenient because other site pages can be put up and tested, as long as they're not linked from the index page. Plus, it keeps the people happy because it's something concrete they can look at.

With a few sites pointed, not a clue here.

Thanks Marcia.

This is partially what is going on with this site/owner.

With a few sites pointed, not a clue here.

Guess I could have worded that one better, sorry. Basicly we are allready being approached (generated by word of mouth in the respective community) for links. I was worried if I threw up a "coming soon" page as an index then I would have incoming links from other sites poimnting to it. You preety much answered what I needed, I just wanted to clarify.

Thank you,

Brian
