I'm just checking the pulse of Netscape 4, what are you seeing as a percentage of total web traffic over the last month or so? I recently read in a DHTML forum that it's use is still much higher than NS6.

NS 4.x 6%
NS 6.x 2%
In December, from about 5,000 visitors.

I think I could count our total NN6 visitors on both hands...

Navigator 4 is showing at 12% (IE 5 at 55%), and NN6 is so low it doesn't even register a percentage. (Through WebLog)

Checking a ten day report of 1600+ visitors, I did not find one NS6 browser referal.
NS4 is <10%.

Is anyone including NS6 into a ISP package or anything else?

my results like mivox. Wonder why NN6 hasn't picked up - other than folks seem to have trouble with the download.

NN4 for my clients in November ran from 7% to 16%, with one oddball showing 22% [!]

Netscape 6 runs consistently under .5%, and as low as .03%

I have a related question, which my current stats analysis doesn't give me. Can anyone see how Netscape 4 on Windows compares to Netscape 4 on Macintosh?

This month:
  • Microsoft 91.2%
  • Netscape 8.3%
  • Opera 0.4%
  • Other 0.1%
NN6 comes in well below NN4 usage...less than 1% of the total.

Last 4 days (about 28k impressions, general interest site)

    N4 = 11%
    N6 = 2.4%

    >Can anyone see how Netscape 4 on Windows compares to Netscape 4 on Macintosh?

Sorry tedster, I can't pull that kind of OS/browser comparison either.

    >Wonder why NN6 hasn't picked up

Because Netscape has lost the public awareness they once had. Outside of tech news, which isn't exactly bigtime with JohnQ, when's the last time you heard Netscape mentioned? Two years ago, the stock market, the developing e-com economy, and interest in dotcoms made Netscape almost a household word.

    For December

    NN 4.x 10.3%
    nn 6.x .8%
    Opera .2%
    IE 6.x 14.2%
    IE 5.x 68.0%
    IE 4.x 2.9%

IE 6 is sure coming on strong

Wonder why NN6 hasn't picked up

Partly, I'm sure it's because so many websites are written in non-validating code designed to miraculaously work on both IE 4-5 and NN4, and they just fall apart on NN6. Download NN6, and the web is a whole new, often non-functioning, even more often ugly, experience.

Yes, it IS a royal pain to deal with code that doesn't work in Netscape.

Granted, code should be good. I couldn't get away with half the messiness in my HTML/ASP code if I were writing VB or RPG, so the forgiveness of IE is a blessing.

With the web becoming a household item, it stands to reason that programming for it should become more intuitive as well. So what if I leave off a   from a cell - the browser should be smart enough to pick it up, as IE does and Netscape doesn't.

Sorry, but the browser wars are over, and Netscape lost.

I also find Netscape to be irritatingly slow in comparison to IE.

txbakers: "Sorry, but the browser wars are over, and Netscape lost."

this kind of assumes that there is no future, simply a past and an endless present

Netscape may never recover from NN4...it may well deserve not to...but use of Opera is growing, likewise Konqueror...but far more importantly use of mobile devices for web access is growing...and so far, where an existing browser is used, the choice for this seems to be Opera

Netscape lost it's "unassailable" market lead within months rather than years...whilst it remains possible for the same to happen to IE I shall build sites that work to standards rather than to a single browser

Here's a live example of why I was checking the pulse; Dhtml with netscape [webmasterworld.com]. I've recently spent 2 months in triple cross-browser hell.

The last month on WebmasterWorld (only counting uniques):

    IE 67.2%
    Opera 15.4%
    Netscape 6-Mozilla-KMeleon-Gaelon 7.3%
    Netscape 4 3.3%
    Other 4.1%

Personally, I think the IE stats are 5-10% high. There are that many 3rd party browsers and filtering proxies out there that misrepresent the browser.

    For November: 30K visits +/-

    MSIE: 88.73%
    Netscape: 10.75%
    Others: <.5%

    Of those stats:

    NN6: 6.58% or roughly 52 visits...of 30K!

As for NN6 proliferation, what will happen to MSIE stats if AOL turns over to Netscape browser? I know a ton of our traffic is from AOLers (can't figure out why). Is AOL still talking about using Netscape?

I've heard (quite UN-officially) that AOL 8 may use Opera. That would line up with other statements I've read about Netscape not being known as a browser company within 6 months.

AOL 7 (still IE) is in a kind of "preview" status as they continue to mail out the tag end of the AOL 6 coasters. If they do use Netscape, they'd better crank up the quality a whole big bunch, or they'll kill the goose that's been laying millions of golden eggs.

    >AOL 8 may use Opera

It makes sense from a competitive standpoint as well. MS and AOL aren't exactly the best at being co-conspirators when it comes to who's going to dominate the world.
