it seems impossible to use setAttribute method in NS4. does it work in NS5?

Yes, setAttribute works in Netscape 6 (they skipped version 5 completely) as well as IE 5. Here's a reference [webreference.com] on the topic.

by the way, even in IE4.72, the getattribute still works. just like NS4.08 is the baseline of NS4 for most cross-browser website, when we mention IE4, which exact version is often used?
