Color Problems in Photoshop

I have a problem with my settings or something in Photoshop and was wondering if someone could help me fix it.

When I create work in Illustrator my colors are perfectly fine, but when I open in Photoshop I've lost all the blacks - they all become browns and all of the other colors are distorted. I can fix this by adjusting the levels, but then it isn't exactly like it was in Illustrator.

I hope that makes sense. Thanks!

Howdy Riffmaster...

In both apps, you can go to "color settings" in the menus and check out the color profiles... the settings for both these apps are usually defaulted to sync up with eachother though, as i recall.

Are you also making sure that you aren't working in different color modes? For instance creating something in Illustrator with a CMYK color mode, and then sending it to Photoshop where it opens up in RGB?

Hi, thanks for the reply,

My color settings seem to match, and I'm currently testing an RGB document using RGB in both programs. For some reason I keep losing my bright colors when opening in Photoshop.
I didn't have this problem before, so I'm not exactly sure what is causing it. I've played around with color settings, levels, color modes, etc.
Anything else it could be?

Thanks,

Nick

hmpf.

That's a toughie. All I can do is keep annoying you about making sure you aren't going from CMYK in one app to RGB in another... I don't know if you know this but in an app like Photoshop, you can be working with a CMYK file and still have RGB sliders in the Color panel. So if you're looking at the color sliders to see if your document is in RGB mode, you're not looking in the right place.

Other than that, sorry, don't really know what to tell you. I only keep harping on the CMYK/RGB thing because having desaturated colors and lower contrast is a signature mark of CMYK on a monitor.

Edit: Also, the fact that this wasn't happening before would be an indication that at some point you opened a file in one of these apps with a different color mode, and never switched back.

Hey,

Thanks a lot for the help. I just played around with a couple things and realized you were right about both things - I believe both were contributing to this problem and I hadn't checked everything.

All set now :)

Even though this is solved, I'll post this for posterity.

When working in RGB, sometimes I mistakenly hit the CMD-Y/CTL-Y, throwing Photoshop into CMYK Preview mode.

I'm still in RGB, but have to think for a minute how to get back (it's under View > Proof Colors)

For fun, try selecting Gamut Warning. That's wacky!
