Toplists and Google

How does Google handle toplists?

I was wondering how Google handles toplist sites.

If you are a toplist site, how will Google rank your site? Will it see it a link farm and penalize the site? Anyways to get a toplist ranked good on Google?

If you list your site on a toplist (or toplists), is the chance your site will get penalized if the site is seen as a link farm?

I was just wondering, since toplists are usually niche type sites.

I have several sites of mine that are listed on various topsites. I can tell you that many of these links from the topsites have been picked up and show up in back links to my sites. I may be wrong, but I wouldn't think Google would show them as back links if they considered them spam.

For certain types of sites like ecards, jokes etc...they can be a valuable source of targeted traffic.

I'm with Imagicor here, speaking from personal experience I've never been penalized for having links to & from toplists and some show up in backlinks giving me decent PR (although the more links on a toplist the less PR benefit you'll get).

However, depending on the link method used (ie the complicated nature of the scripts used to make the links) some links will not be tracked by Google.

I'm not 100% certain but I'd think it very unlikely that Google frowns upon toplists.
