I just got different results using that utility, but not Brett's on this site. Time to look deeper...

Forget it. This isn't a backlink checker. You need to check backlinks, not an allinurl.

[webmasterworld.com...]

That's the one to use.

It's all 642k still.

Sorry if I kicked up the "getting twitchy waiting for the update" state with that earlier thread.

What's the assumption about the update, and why?

Is it that if results from www, www2, and www3 are different that the update is in progress, or is it only more specific to "link:www.yahoo.com"?

Ah, I think night_hawk may be onto something. About a half hour ago, I did a "link:yahoo.com" on www and got 4890. Did same on www2 and got 4860. Did same for amazon.com and got different results on www and www2

(Note: When checking for updates, I've always used the link command without the "www" and it seems to be as reliable an indicator as when using the "www".)

I hate to fan the flames of update fever, but just reporting what I saw. All is back to normal now.

The alinurl command is worthless. Seeing different backlinks with any URL however is a sign that there may be an update. However, I am seeing fresh tags still, and I've never seen that just before an update.

For the last three updates at least, the update has been preceded by the Google directory updating its pr bars. This is completely separate from Google updating the directory with the new dump from dmoz. i have seen no sign of it occurring however.

If so, very interesting observation Powdork. I've always figured that the first thing calculated was the PR. Calculating PR has gotta be very computational complex and lengthy, which is why I presume Google updates once a month. Thus, before the dance Google will know the PR, and the dance is where all the other elements of the algo get factored in. The trick here is to know a Google directory cat where a site would be expected this month to have a large jump in PR. Such as getting a new, high PR inbound link you know will be reflected in this update.

i have seen no sign of it occurring however.

-sj is showing a different (possibly updated) directory. I don't think it's the previous month's directory and it looks like they're not using the new dmoz dump.

If so, very interesting observation Powdork.

The observation I believe belongs to Lazerzubb. It has accurately foretold the coming of the backlink change with a lead time of several to about six hours. I was able to announce last months update with this method. Still, no mousepad. ;(

Just been absolutely hammered by freshbots, crawler 10, 11 & 12.

90 page site, I think every page has been hit at least once within the last 3 hours or so.

Yes, I can confirm what coconutz wrote. I am seeing a different ordering in the cat my sites are listed in on -sj than google.com. In fact, most cats I checked show a new ordering. Something is afoot.

Was recently told that the -sj directory is 2 months old as I also inquired about not seeing the new dmoz dump.:o

-sj did not look familiar to me so I was thinking that it possibly could have been updated.

This would make sense that -sj has an old copy. The site that went up in the cat I checked on -sj I expected would have gone down.

Were getting really close to March, I wonder if they just decided to skip Feburary. I hope not.

I hope this all means that an update is going to happen. I don't think I stay up for many more nights :)

Relax. The dance will begin when it does. And because of freshbot it isn't quite as important as it used to be. I am one of those webmasters who intend just to keep on creating new content and tweaking old content as usual during the update.

It will happen, take a google chill pill and think about it again this time next week :)

My site has also been hit deeply by freshbot. Its been visited before but not anywhere near this deeply. None of the previous visits have resulted in fresh tags as the sites only 4 mos old (not that that is relevant).

Moral -

The delay for the update seems to be directly proportional to the number of clients asking you why their site is not in Google yet

......sigh

Moral-

Never try to schedule your week around predicted dance times.

I'm beginning to feel like Google has ditched me at the prom :)

I am seeing pr that differs in the G directory and the toolbar now on the west coast for several categories. I think the update will be in the next several hours(actually, I think this means it has begun). Just watch.

-sj's directory might be everfluxing, so others are seeing different things. But I've not seen it any different over the last four months.

sj looks exactly the same to me

I've checked the directory and the engine

I'm not talking about anything other than the regular Google directory. The pr graphs next to the site listing will update to the new pr before the 'traditional' update begins. Go to a directory category with a significant number of listings. Click on the links and compare the toolbar pr with the directory pr.
