I can't afford to have my site down so I won't miss any customers from Google and also Googlebot.

But I would like to have my own IP, if purchase dedicated IP from my hosts, will my site go down for a while?

Not if your hosts do it propley,

if they setup the ip address and change the dns at the same time you will be down for seconds.

Are you going to be on the same machine, ore are they going to move you to a new box?

If you are on the same machine, but you have your own IP, there should be no problem, as the virtual host should still work with the old IP address too.

If you are switching to a different machine, you will need to arrange with your host to leave a copy of your site on the old IP with apache still set up with the virtual host info till googlebot stops showing up at your old IP. This can take up to 3 months.

GOOD POINT BigDave.

if your host moves the site to a different box and doesn't leave the old site up google could drop you altogether.

I will be on the same server, just I would prefer a dedicated IP since it is only $1/month.

Same server + new ip = no down for googlebot and also other everyday visitors?

It depends on the Web server configuration. For example, Apache is often configured to serve domains only when the DNS resolves to the IP being requested.
