Is it worth using keywords for CSS elements

Is it worth naming CSS div elements with keywords in order to improve site ranking, or would that be a waste of time i.e. rather than naming elements Menu, Banner etc., maybe I could use Keyword1, Keyword2 instead ...? Any suggestions?

Do what seems natural for you.

And leave it to Google to decide if they like it.

If Google consider a certain practice to be spamming to such an extent that it disturbs their results, they will tweak their algo to avoid the problem. Or they will handcheck sites that are reported to abuse their rules.

If you were Google would you decide a site was more relevant for "widgets" if it used "widget" as the name of a div element?

If it works now, I would bet that as soon as they saw a site doing that, they would all have a good laugh at the creativity of the webmaster that was doing that, make sure that it never happened again, then they would go digging around the site looking for anything else you did that they might ding you with.

Before you start messing around doing this, I would suggest that you spend your time working on your real content. You will probably get a lot farther that way.
