Hello,

I just stumbled on this site earlier today, and it seems that all of you have a really good grasp on a lot of different things that tend to do with Webmasters most common questions. So here's my question.

How do we improve a sites ranking within google? It seems that we ahve several hundred links within Google, but a user would have to go through several pages in order to find us.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks,

Comp World

welcome to webmasterworld.

Improving pagerank is NOT the key, improving listings, traffic and conversions are a lot more important.

too many people play on the PR scenario, when in fact it does NOT necessarily bring rewards.

Best of luck, and get reading my new friend.

Welcome to WebmasterWorld, CompWorld!

Two good starting places:

[webmasterworld.com...]
[webmasterworld.com...]

Then browse or search this site. Hint: Using Google's site search often gives better results than using the board's search.

Thanks for the welcome. Its just very fustrating to be on the top of the list for three years, and then get shot down to the bottom for no reason.

Hi Comp World,
I too got stiffed on the last update. Page views and clicks
cut in half. No Changes in my pages. Just an innocent
victim of Googles tinkering with the algorithm.
Lots of sites in the top ten still loaded with hidden text,
stuffed with keywords and other tricks. So Google apparently
not focusing on this.
Good luck next update.

I just stumbled on this site earlier today,

This is the key to your question. You did not "stumble" on this site, it came up in Google (or wherever you found it), and the reason it came up is that it has been well positioned, with a lot of thought.

You would be surprised how many people say they "stumbled" upon my hotel sites.

Think in terms of picking up those stumblers on Google, and you have the answer, as Shakil says in post #2

PR is somewhat over rated. We have pages with low PR that come up higher than similar pages with PR that is 1 to 3 higher on some keyword searches.

I think Google is the only one that knows all the factors, but it is obvious that PR is only one - and maybe not the most important one.

Hello,

Found this site via webguerrilla.com. Not via Google. But thats not the topic of the discussion. It seems that Google keeps on changing the alg. every few months or so. So, there for, their ranking system does not seem all that much solid. It cannot be a true rank if sites for years had been rated high, then all of a sudden they nearly fall of the charts... So to speak of course.
