I want my clients to have the benefit of my links but some of them want me to track their traffic from my site. How can I best do this? Thanks

Link to a script that tracks the clicks. Make sure that the script sends a 301 or 302 status and the location of your clients page. Links on WebmasterWorld work like this and Google shows them as backlinks.

Make the target URL as simple as possible. As I've posted here in other threads, two of eight sites I have cgi-redirect links to with unique destination URLs (index.html?1237) show me as backlinks, the other six (with more complicated destination URLs) don't.
