When searching for one given french word "<edited here>", SERPs consistently show a French link-farm as #1... and this bugs me quite a bit.
I have read and learned a lot on WebMasterWorld, especially about what was considered as "good and bad practices to promote a web site". I honestly believe that I've got the right picture even if all the posts I've read are written in a "foreign language", at least for me ;)
So my question is: do these SERPs mean that Google isn't considering link-farms as bad neighbours anymore, or did I misunderstand totally what practices are to be avoided?

A Link Farms are still a big no no but until they a caught and all the ramifications can be dealt with they can still rule the SERP's when use correctly.
Sad but true. it used to when they got caught alot of sites where hit now google seems to have different penalties it's hard to tell what effect it will have on the linking structure of all the sites.

The whole debate on whether spam reporting is "ratting" or not doing it is a "conspiracy of theives" is all a matter of perception.
In other places people say that they are "master spammers" but never "hand on bleeding heart" report another site for spam. Such a conspiracy of thieves to my mind doesent really help anybody but the spam industry, and does not help improve the experience people have in finding what they want on the Web quickly and correctly. for if people cannot use the Web usefully, they will surely drift back to other media, leaving both spammers and others in the lurch.
...But all to his own.
