Googlebot and the update?

I have never quite understood what googlebot is doing during the update. He/She seems to just hit a few, random pages with no real pattern I can see...

Is googlebot just looking for new stuff, links etc.?

Any thoughts?

It seems to mostly ignore me while the update is on. I've had just a very few freshbot visits since Sunday, the same pattern as the last indexing. A couple of visits had a code of 304 on the index page as though it were just seeing if the site was alive (I'm a bit foggy on that stuff).

I've been checking the logs every couple of hours in hopes of seeing a googlebot again with no luck since yesterday. The update was very good to me so I'm hopeful.
