I have been doing link exchanges over the last fews days and further optimising my site. What I'm woundering is around how many link to my site with my keywords in them do I need before I start to see a differance.
The top position for the keywords i'm after only has 15 backlinks and is a PR4 but has the keywords in the domain name which I do not. I think I must have around 100 links to my site now, around 20 with my keywords in. Can I expect big things next update?
Also does keyword density in the actual links to your site matter?

I don't think it should be a big challenge to get to number 1 in the situation you describe, but that's just my impression for spending some time here. Others may chime in who surely know way more than i.
A company I work for has a slogan, that includes the top keyword phrase, and nearly every link says "Company - keyword phrase, bla bla"
We're now #1 for that phrase and it weighs so heavily that when we recently added another word to the title of the homepage, it jumped from "nowhere to be seen" on "keyword phrase new-word" to #17, and I guess this all comes from the keyword phrase being included in over 1000 links (from 1400 total)
The link itself is important - the anchor (link text) however is what makes that link relevant to you.
Strategic site development - develop as many links as it takes to get you to your preferred position (IMO that's #10 of better) 5th is perfect since you are at least on the immediate visable screen - thus your appealing "Title" can draw users immdediately away from #1 - 4 without wasting time developing for #1.
Once here start attempting to get other link anchors in use that parallel your current one.
Monitor the updates, if you start sliding - add a few (first anchor) to bring you back to near top.
Note: aiming for #1 "always" is under-productive since most people click on the most appealing listings and not the spammy looking ones.
Be the best you can be, and that #1 rank spammer won't have a clue?
