Googlebot spidering my old IP

will this cause problems for me?

Hello all,

I recently moved my enter site to a new server. (Our old host was kind of crappy)

Anyways i switched the domain name and everything to the new ip. However I noticed that googlebot was spidering our old domain.. (it is still there, but you can only reach it via the IP address)

Is this going to cause any problems in the next update?

It just might. I would remove the old content and replace it with a redirect to the real domain.

I think that Google doesn't update their IP addresses very frequently. I like to keep the old server active until Gbot actually hits the new one and lays off the old. It is definitely worth a couple bucks.

I have been very afraid to switch our hosting company because I am afraid the transistion will not go smoothly with googlebot. Can anyone give me a step by step plan of action that I can take that would help ensure a smooth transition?

We have been growing our site and have just reached the maximum bandwidth allowed on the plan (which is 12.5 Gig and the plan costs $100 per month). If I go over, they charge me $100 per Gig, so I would like to change (mind you, this is a well known hosting company). Althoguh we survive on google and if we were down for a month (because we missed a crawl), it would be devastating.

Open your new hosting account and upload your files there. Once you are sure the deep crawl is over, change the DNS from your old server to the new and wait for it to propagate throughout the internet. Then delete the files on the old server and cancel the account. All should go fine. I did this in December with absolutely no down time.

1) Move site to new host
2) Check new host logs
3) When you see googlebot hiting the new site and not return to the old site wait a week and then take down files from old host.

( based on the fact Google seem the last SE to get an IP change and they are also the most used SE)
