Forum Moderators: open
This is my first dance.
I have a new site, with one inbound link (from ODP).
I have lots of content.
Google hasn't assigned a page rank that sticks, but it's alternating between 0 and 4, so I'm guessing it will stabilize at 4.
For most of my keyword searches, I'm in the #1 to #5 range, frequently beating out PR5 and PR6 sites.
So, what I've learned is that:
a. Content is the most important. (As other posters frequently point out.)
b. Pagerank is only one component of ranking, but there are obviously lots of others. (As other posters have pointed out.)
It greatly relieves my mind. I wasn't looking forward to grovelling for links.
Although, once the lump in my gut subsided, what other people have said finally sunk in. - Google is trying to find the best sites. If you concentrate on making your site the best you can, and do all the optimizing tricks posted on this forum, you can do all right with only one link.
Thanks to all the posters and FAQS!
Regards

That will only work if your content is clearly superior to that of your competitors. In the frequent case where everyone has more or less equal content links do matter very much! I cetrainly don't enjoy "grovelling for links", but grovel I do :(
