HI there's the situation.

I have 2 links to 2 version of the same forum on my front page. Basicly it is the same with one with text and grahpics and one is text only for low bandwidth users. Will google think i'm duplicating the content and drop my PR ranking?

The users will only be using one (can't use both at the same time) so that's what I'd give Google and exclude the other. But I worry a lot about duplicate content.

and everyone will continue to worry so long as the guys at Google keep doing quick fixes instead of optimizing a robust, flexible search engine.

they should be worrying about their search engine's inclusion policy, not exclusion

this kind of lazy strategy is why altavista is no longer king, and why eventually as soon as someone comes up with a better engine, google won't be either. the only thing stopping competitors is resources and money to run such a huge infrastructure.
