New to this forums, but some comments/remarks/questions on the Google algorithm.
As it seems the Google algorithm now is based almost 100% on link popularity.
People buy lots of expired , but still listed in yahoo and dmoz, domains with a high link popularity.
Buy an expired domain, make a new site about whatever topic, not especially related to the sites content before, and get top rankings for top searched keywords because of this link popularity/pagerank.
Former Kids/Family/Personal/Education/Computer/Internet..... sites, still listed in dmoz or yahoo, now link to xxx sites. Crazy....
With top rankings...
I know they get busted one time, after a few months, but expired domains with listings in yahoo and dmoz seem to be big business for the past few months.
It is easy to give 1000+ examples...
How can this be possible and accepted?
I think link popularity has become TOO much important in the Google algorithm.
Any comments on this statement?
GoogleGuy?
maximax,
You are making a mistaken assumption. They do not get that position in the SERPs *just* because they bought an expired domain. They still have to do a good job at appealing to the other 100+ portions of the algorithm.
Yeah, they are cheating, and getting a boost, but the PR of the page is not the *only* reason they are listed high in the results.
You are also complaining about a practice that is only a problem in certain online sectors. You are not going to find car dealerships, software companies, universites, chiropractic supplies companies or self-help bookstores using this technique.
Have you noticed this practice anywhere other than adult sites? If it is only common in one or two sectors that are totally spammed out anyway, then it will not be a high priority with google.
Remember, Google tests all the changes in their algorithm, so there must be at least a few places where it improved the results.

Hi Big Dave ( Big? I am big, how big are you?)
It is in all sectors where the affiliate commissions are high.
I told before I can give 1000 examples
How many online sectors do you want?
Let me know and I will post them ( if it is not against the rules) or mail them to you

This is just because there are a million more SEOs in those specific areas, so you will encounter more tricky people than on average.
It's not an overwhelming problem at the moment. Besides, I work in an area where affiliate commissions are high, and I don't have any problem outranking SEO attempts like these 9 times out of 10. I don't even notice them as a huge problem, and I love that they are there in the SERPs next to my pages....
... because my pages are very attractive and well written, unlike most of this junk. So in the end, if you can't join 'em, beat 'em.
No you missed what I meant.
lets say that site is now drawn to the attention of google and it gets banned.
Do you think the owner is in their rights to go through your aff. sites and try to get you banned.
we try to generalise to protect each other. whether it's spam or not, we are not googles spam police. (Googleguy not included )

Hi DaveN
I know we are not Google's spam police and that is not my intention.
Everybody is in his rights to try to ban my sites if he/she wants. There will allways be something wrong with affiliate/commercial site.....
Money.....
If I do everything right.... I don not know....
What is spam and what is not ?
The surfer is looking for something and the search engine must give it.
It is about quality...
Example:
somebody is searching for a 1969 yellow car
A 1000 pages site for this type of cars offers lots of info but not the 1969 yellow car ( a blue one, a red one....)
the 1 page site with only an a 2 line text and a banner offers the link to this 1969 yellow car.
What site is more useful? Assuming the surfer knows everything about the car brand...)

Hi fiver,
I am not complaining as beating most of the SEO's is not so difficult.......
Optimizing 3-4 word search terms for a few thousands bucks.... I can do the same for......FREE

Welcome Maximax,
All other things being equal, weighted and motivated link popularity comes in heavily.
Links are votes, both on-line and off-line, that is a very strong way of evaluating quality.
"Buying" votes, both on-line and off-line, by whatever method can lead you to get caught.
The beauty of Google is that, in many ways, one can mostly check (backlinks) if this "buying" is really done.
Any excess mostly leads to attention and reporting/quality complaints which leads to algo improvements.
What ranking algo would you suggest works better in the real online search engine world?
BTW, DMOZ and Yahoo links are just links like any other.
(DMOZ might count for two because one also sees the Google directory backlink).
